The history of Mitsubishi spans generations and can be traced back to just three aging steamships. Yataro Iwasaki, the founder, ran the three-ship operation. It was his heirs—a brother, son, and nephew—who expanded the operation’s business into several fields during their second, third, and fourth terms as president respectively. Over the past 142 years, Mitsubshi has grown into the modern, multifaceted international company we know today.
1870 to 1884
In the 14 years after its conception, Mitsubishi grew to incorporate a copper mine and shipbuilding yard into its arsenal. With these acquisitions, it later engineered what was the first domestically-produced steel steamship in Japan.
1885 to 1890
After this initial growth, Mitsubishi decided to diversify and expand its production power while modernizing its business. The company laid down the tracks for future growth by strengthening the business’s presence in the banking, warehousing, and insurance industries in Japan.
1890 to 1914
Yataro’s son Hisaya, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, diversified operations even more, adding marketing and real estate divisions to the company. The private investments, like Mitsubishi Paper Mill and Asahi Glass, made by Hisaya are still part of the Mitsubishi family today. Hisaya was an ethical man, and a generous one to boot. Before he died, he donated two expansive Japanese Gardens to Tokyo.
1914 to Present
After WWII, allied occupational forces insisted that Japan’s largest industrial groups disband. Mitsubishi companies split into smaller enterprises, only to make a comeback after the San Francisco Peace Treaty reestablished Japan as a welcome entity in the international community. Since then, Mitsubishi established the Mitsubishi Foundation in 1969 and the company has been known throughout the world as a leading innovator in automotive design ever since.
